The Cumbrian Links of the Dukes of Devonshire
The Cavendish family who are better known as the Dukes of Devonshire left their mark across much of England, but nowhere more intriguingly than in the landscapes of the North. Their story moves from the grandeur of Chatsworth and the politics of Georgian society to railways, shipbuilding, scientific discovery, country estates and communities shaped by industry and patronage. In Cumbria especially, the Devonshire connection appears repeatedly, sometimes almost hidden in plain sight.
This blog explores those connections through places, people and landscapes. Some stories are well known, others far less so, but together they reveal how deeply the Cavendish/Devonshire name became woven into the history of Cumbria.
